Vitamin D – Important?

If you are an avid follower of health and nutrition you will likely have heard all the buzz about Vitamin D (more specifically D3). It is now the belief of many well educated professionals in this filed, that vD3 is the vitamin that most people are deficient in and the most important one to not be deficient in.

What is vD3, well it is a fat soluble vitamin whose major role is to aid in absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestine and build and maintain bone mass. However,it has other functions like, metabolizing calcium, it also has helps in reducing inflammation, moderating immune function, leveling mood and preventing malignant cell growth. There is so much more it can do for you and it can be read on a great page posted by Harvard School of Public Health here. There is so much information out there, do a google search on it and see for your self.

If I am deficient where can I get it? There are several places you can get this substance with out taking a supplement. For instance, if you spend 15 minutes 3 times a week in direct sunlight with more than the skin on your hands and face exposed ,you will likely get ample doses of vD3. But lets be honest, mot of us work in doors and when we go out side we cover up due to our fear of the evil UV rays of the sun. So when only our faces and hands are exposed out side of our highly fashionable clothing that defines who we are to on lookers we are not getting the amount of sunshine we need every day. So where do we turn.

Well there is always food! Foods that contain vD are fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel are sources of this vitamin, as are egg yolks, cheese and beef liver. Vitamin D-fortified milk and other foods are also good sources.

Maybe you don’t like or don’t eat those foods, don’t worry you can always supplement. Getting a vD3 supplement is not only easy but it is quite affordable. I personally take 4000iu of D3 every day in the form of a gel capsule. I am not recommending that you take this amount, in fact I am not recommending you take it at all. But if you are intersted in the brand I use it is:

It retails here in victoria for approx. $24.99 and that bottle lasts for four months. That works out to less that $6.25 a month. So if you are on a budget just cut out one late a month and you are good to go.

I am just letting you know what I know about it and you can decide for your self. Also keep in mind that you should always consult your doctor before adding any new supplements to your diet. I personally have seen an Endocrinologist and he has said for me, every thing I am taking in the measurements that I am taking them, will not harm me and likely only bring benefit to my health.
